Neck Ageing: Why Prevention Beats Correction Every Time
The neck is one of the most neglected areas in any skincare routine — and one of the first places that visible ageing shows up. At ADC, across our Dublin, Limerick and London clinics, we see the same pattern again and again: patients invest heavily in facial skincare and treatments while the neck and the backs of the hands are left to fend for themselves. The truth is simple. Prevention is always better than cure, and the neck and hands need exactly the same daily anti-ageing discipline as the face.
The Daily Routine That Actually Prevents Ageing
For patients who genuinely want to prevent ageing on the neck and hands, the routine is straightforward and needs to be applied every single day, not just to the face:

-
Morning: a good-quality 20% vitamin C serum, followed by sunscreen
-
Evening: retinol, provided the patient is not pregnant or breastfeeding
We recommend REFORM Skincare, as it offers excellent quality at a more accessible price point. Other cosmeceutical brands available in Ireland and the UK — Obagi, SkinCeuticals and IS Clinical among them — are also excellent quality, though generally more expensive.
Why Prevention Matters So Much for the Neck and Hands

Even for patients who are willing to invest in treatment at ADC, we can never achieve the same results on the neck and hands that we can on the face. The skin here is thinner and more delicate, which means laser, peel and Secret RF settings all have to be turned down considerably to avoid scarring. This means multiple treatments at lower settings are needed to make meaningful progress — a slower, more limited process than what's achievable on facial skin.
UVA: The Damage Patients Don't See Coming
Patients often think of sun damage purely in terms of UVB — the rays responsible for sunburn. What's frequently forgotten is UVA. UVA rays pass straight through glass, remain present even on cloudy days, and cause a great deal of silent, cumulative damage that patients typically only notice once it's already done.
One comparison we regularly use in clinic is to look at the right side of a patient's face against the left, the right hand against the left, and the face against skin that's rarely exposed, such as the stomach — which may travel to Mallorca on holiday just as much as the face does, yet ages nowhere near as badly. Over the years, the difference becomes striking. In Ireland and the UK, the simplest explanation for this asymmetry is UVA exposure through the car window while driving.
If a patient understands this early and takes it on board, a huge amount of future ageing can be prevented. The harder conversation is with patients who come to us once the damage is already visible, asking what can still be done.
It's Never Too Late to Start
Even where damage has already occurred, starting a proper skincare routine is never a wasted effort. Consistent use of vitamin C, sunscreen and retinol remains essential — not only for anti-ageing, but also for reducing redness pigmentation and, critically, for skin cancer prevention.
In-Clinic Treatments for an Ageing Neck

Where the neck has already started to show visible signs of ageing, several treatments at ADC can make a real difference:
-
Botulinum toxin and skin boosters — these improve how the skin looks and feels, softening the appearance of neck bands and improving overall texture
-
Secret RF and TCA peels — these work at a deeper level to improve collagen quality
-
A course of IPL — very effective for redness and pigmentation irregularities
Where neck ageing is more severe, a neck lift or liposuction with a plastic surgeon may be the appropriate next step. It's important to understand, though, that surgery addresses laxity and contour — it does not improve the quality of the skin itself. Skincare and skin-quality treatments remain necessary even after surgery.
More aggressive options such as CO2 laser can have a place in neck rejuvenation, but they carry real risk in this area and can cause scarring if not used with considerable caution. This is not a treatment to approach lightly, and it should only be considered under close specialist supervision.
